on Camino Real. This house was custom built in 1960 for Dr & Mrs Don B. Campbell, who’ve owned it for all these 50 years, imagine. It was listed today for $699,000 with 2.5 acres. Check out the rendering of the foothills in 1960. You gotta love it.

The first time I saw houses like this was about 30 years ago in Palm Springs. Back then they were all over the place in PS, and I believe to this day they’re prized and preserved rather than gutted and ‘fixed up’.
And just for the heck of it I looked at the county appraisers assessment of this house and he rates the construction quality as ‘Excellent’. Now I hate to sound like a crotchety old fart but, if you look at the appraisers opinion of homes in the foothills built in the last 10 or 15 years, you’d be lucky to find 1 in 100 rated ‘Excellent’.

PK,
it was listed a couple of ways - with 2.5 ($699) & with 1.0 ($449). It sold with just the 1.0 acre - $449 list/$419.5 sale,

Just saw it was 2.5 acres. Must have divided the land...

Just curious - this listing posted to sold in the MLS today as a 499K listing rather than 699K. Did something happen between the listing and the sale?
Thanks,
PK

There are a few beautiful examples of modern design here in Tucson from this period. It would be great to collect some examples to post on a web site like modernphoenix.net. It would raise awareness of their value and hopefully aid in their preservation.
Thanks again Jake,

Regarding the Cliff May home: There is an image of said home at: http://www.cliffmayhomes.com/2009/08/cliff-may-prefabs-in-tucson.html Read the text in the image, it cites Tucson. The blog article talks about 20th street & Van Buren (ave?) - Google mapguide / street view doesn't show this home. There isn't any mountains in the background of the photo either. The hunt continues?

PK,
The group that collects info on this is Tucson MAPP (Modern Architecture Preservation Project). Their website is: http://mapptucson.org/ They have yet to publish anything publicly on their growing list of homes due to various reasons but they would be interested in this one. They seem to trend towards certain architects or very fine "modern" specimens that fit the design of that period (50s-60s). The phoenix that I know of is: http://modernphoenix.net/

There is a Cliff May designed house somewhere in Tucson. Does anyone know if it is located here in the Foothills?

I know that up in Phoenix there are groups that collect information about mid-century designs and their architects. They have a web site. Is there anyone doing that kind of architectural research down here?

Nice mid-modern. Any info on who the architect / designer was?

Let's hope who ever buys this house preserves it and the land it sits on. Absolutely incredible! Thanks for sharing.
